Joburg Super Kings have appointed former South African fast bowler Allan Donald as their bowling coach for the SA20 2027 season. Can he lead them to their first title?
Joburg Super Kings have a new weapon in their quest for a first SA20 title: Allan Donald, the legendary South African fast bowler, is joining as bowling coach for the 2027 season. The franchise made the announcement on Tuesday, October 13, and it's a move that has cricket fans buzzing.
Donald will team up with head coach Albie Morkel, who took the reins after Stephen Fleming stepped down following the 2026 season. The 59-year-old replaces Eric Simons, who is moving to Fleming's support staff in England. It's a homecoming of sorts for Donald, a national hero who knows a thing or two about intimidating batters.
### A Coaching Journey Around the World
Donald's coaching resume is as impressive as his playing career. He started as a temporary bowling consultant for England in 2007, then spent time with Warwickshire in 2008. He was New Zealand's bowling coach for the 2011 World Cup, and later joined South Africa under Gary Kirsten, staying until the 2015 World Cup.
His franchise experience includes stints with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Pune Warriors India in the IPL, plus a role with Kent in the County Championship. Most recently, he worked with Bangladesh as a fast bowling coach. Now, he brings that wealth of knowledge to the Super Kings.
"Allan's ability to nurture fast bowlers is second to none," said a source close to the franchise. "He's got a knack for getting the best out of young talent."
### More Than Just a Bowling Coach
Donald's appointment is part of a broader shake-up at JSK. Former wicketkeeper-batter Pierre de Bruyn joins as fielding coach, reuniting with Morkel from their time at Titans and Namibia. Evan Speechly takes over as physiotherapist from Tommy Simsek.
On the playing side, the franchise has been busy. They brought back former captain Faf du Plessis for R 2.7 million (about $150,000) at the SA20 auction and paid R 2.9 million (roughly $160,000) for uncapped allrounder Jason Rowles. Kieron Pollard, Blessing Muzarabani, Andries Gous, and Dayyaan Galiem also joined the squad.
The new-look team includes Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, James Vince, Rilee Rossouw, and Leus du Plooy, with Jamie Overton as a wildcard signing. It's a mix of experience and youth that could be dangerous.
### The Road Ahead
The fifth edition of SA20 kicks off on January 17, 2027, at St George's Park in Gqeberha. The opening match is a rematch of the 2026 final between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals. The final is set for February 21 in Cape Town.
For Super Kings fans, the big question is: can Donald's magic finally bring home the trophy? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sureβthe bowling attack is in good hands.
