Allan Donald is the new bowling coach for Joburg Super Kings ahead of SA20 2027, joining Albie Morkel's staff as the franchise chases its first title.
Joburg Super Kings have a new man running the bowling department. The franchise confirmed on Tuesday, October 13, that former South African fast bowler Allan Donald will serve as bowling coach for the SA20 2027 season. It's a move that signals intent from a team still hunting its first title.
### Donald Slots Into Albie Morkel's Setup
Donald won't be working in isolation. He joins head coach Albie Morkel, who took charge after Stephen Fleming stepped down following the 2026 campaign. The 59-year-old replaces Eric Simons, who is heading to England to join Fleming's support staff.
Here's the thing about Donald: he retired from playing back in 2004, and he's barely stopped coaching since. Super Kings have gone four seasons without lifting the SA20 trophy, so the pressure on the bowling unit is real. Now it answers to one of the most respected fast-bowling minds in the game.
### A Coaching Resume That Speaks for Itself
Donald's track record reads like a tour of world cricket. He started in 2007 as a temporary bowling consultant for England, then spent time with Warwickshire in 2008. New Zealand came calling for the 2011 World Cup, and by July of that year he was back home with South Africa under Gary Kirsten, staying through the 2015 World Cup.
His franchise and county work is just as varied:
- Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Pune Warriors India in the IPL
- Kent in the County Championship
- Bangladesh as a fast-bowling coach
In short, he's seen the game from nearly every angle it offers.
### More Changes Behind the Scenes
The Donald announcement came with two other staff moves. Former wicketkeeper-batter Pierre de Bruyn is on board as fielding coach, reuniting with Morkel after their time together at Titans and Namibia. Evan Speechly also takes over as physiotherapist from Tommy Simsek.
On the playing side, the squad has been reshaped. Faf du Plessis returns to the franchise for about $150,000 at the recent auction, and uncapped allrounder Jason Rowles cost roughly $160,000. Kieron Pollard, Blessing Muzarabani, Andries Gous, and Dayyaan Galiem also joined.
Add Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, James Vince, Rilee Rossouw, and Leus du Plooy to the mix, plus Jamie Overton as a wildcard signing, and you've got a roster with serious depth.
### What's Next for the SA20
The fifth edition kicks off January 17, 2027, at St George's Park in Gqeberha. Fittingly, the opener is a rematch of the 2026 final between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals. The season wraps with the final on February 21 in Cape Town.
As one observer put it, "Donald's arrival gives this bowling attack a credibility boost it hasn't had before." Whether that translates into a first trophy is the question everyone will be watching.
