CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad shoulders the blame after a 43-run loss to RCB, marking the team's third straight defeat in a troubled IPL 2026 start.
The Chennai Super Kings are in a real slump. They just suffered their third straight loss in IPL 2026, falling to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru by a hefty 43 runs. It's a deeply troubling start to the season, and the pressure is mounting.
Chasing a massive target of 251 runs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, CSK were bowled out for 207. Their captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, didn't mince words after the game, immediately putting the blame on his own shoulders.
### A Captain's Candid Admission
"I think, maybe if I would have contributed more at the top of the order, you never know, we would have chased it down," Gaikwad said. "So definitely it's on me today."
That's a pretty raw admission. You can tell he's feeling the weight of this difficult campaign. His own performance didn't helpβhe lasted just three balls, scoring only 7 runs before getting out in the very first over. That left CSK exposed right from the start, with the required run rate climbing fast.
His opening partner, Sanju Samson, isn't faring much better. He managed just 9 runs, marking his third straight failure this season. It's a stark contrast to his excellent form during the T20 World Cup. So far in the IPL, he's only produced 22 runs across three games.
Together, these two just aren't giving CSK the platform they desperately need. It's a pattern that's becoming impossible to ignore.
### A Glimmer of Hope in the Middle Order
The game looked lost early. CSK found themselves in serious trouble at 30 for 3, and then 84 for 5. A successful chase seemed impossible. But then, something interesting happened.
The middle and lower order decided to fight. Sarfaraz Khan blazed his way to 50 runs off just 25 balls. Prashant Veer added a lively 43 off 29 deliveries. Jamie Overton smashed 37 off only 16 balls, and Shivam Dube chipped in too.
It was a collective effort that pushed CSK past 200 runs, which felt like a minor victory given how the innings started. Gaikwad himself was surprised.
"Even I was surprised, to be honest," he admitted. "Great fight by Sarfaraz, Prashant Veer, Jamie Overton, even to some extent Shivam Dube."
He credited the lower order for refusing to give up. But the gap between 207 and 251 was just too big to bridge.
### Problems Run Deeper Than One Game
This isn't just about one bad night. This defeat extends Gaikwad's losing streak as captain to seven consecutive matches. That's a statistic that will deeply concern the franchise.
CSK now sit at the very bottom of the IPL 2026 points table. Their net run rate is a dismal -2.517. The problems are piling up on all fronts:
- Their bowling attack conceded 250 runs against RCB.
- Both designated openers are completely out of form.
- Key players MS Dhoni and Dewald Brevis are still out with injuries.
Brevis is expected back for their next game, and Dhoni's return is anticipated soon. That should help with batting depth and team morale. But simply changing personnel won't fix the core issue. If the top order keeps crumbling in the powerplay, they're fighting an uphill battle every single time.
### What's Next for CSK?
Their next chance to turn things around is a home game against the Delhi Capitals on Saturday, April 11. It's an opportunity to stop the slide, but it's going to require significant improvement in both batting and bowling.
Meanwhile, RCB is moving in the opposite direction. They've secured two convincing wins from their opening matches and look like genuine title contenders again.
For CSK, the path back to form is clear. It starts with contributions from the top of the order. Their captain knows that better than anyone. The question is, can they execute when it matters most? The pressure is on, and the clock is ticking.
