Fakhar Zaman is out for Lahore Qalandars' next two PSL matches. On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the Pakistan Cricket Board made it official. They said the 35-year-old opener allegedly tampered with the ball during Sunday night's game against Karachi Kings in Lahore. Zaman said he didn't do it. The hearing went ahead anyway, and he lost. That's the short version, but there's a lot more to unpack here. ### What Actually Happened in the Karachi Kings Match Qalandars were already losing when things got messier. Late in Karachi Kings' run chase, umpire Faisal Afridi noticed something odd. The ball had gone from Shaheen Shah Afridi's hands to Fakhar's, and he wanted a closer look. He and the other umpire, Sharfuddoula, spent a good while examining it. They both agreed the ball's condition had been altered. A replacement ball was brought in immediately. Here's the kicker: The Kings needed just 14 runs to win at that moment. They were awarded five penalty runs on top of that. They ended up winning by four wickets. The timing couldn't have been worse for Lahore.  ### How the PCB Classified the Offence The PCB called this a Level 3 breach of the PSL code of conduct. A first offence at that level can get you a one to two-match ban. Fakhar got the full two-match suspension. Former Sri Lanka cricketer Roshan Mahanama, now a match referee, ran the hearing. TV footage showed Fakhar, Shaheen, and Haris Rauf all handling the ball before the umpire intervened. It wasn't a good look. Fakhar didn't accept the charge, so the hearing ran its full course. The decision came down against him. ### The Two Games Fakhar Will Miss He's unavailable for the Qalandars' game against Multan Sultans on April 3. Then he'll miss the match against Islamabad United on April 9. Both are crucial games Lahore needs to win at this tournament stage. There is an appeal route. PSL rules give him 48 hours from the written verdict to challenge the decision. That clock is ticking. ### A Separate Fine for Shaheen Shaheen Shah Afridi got hit with a separate $3,500 fine. This had nothing to do with the ball tampering. Punjab Police had told him he couldn't bring guests to teammate Sikandar Raza's hotel room. He did it anyway. The Qalandars fined him for the security breach. ### Why PSL 2026 Has Such Tight Security This season's PSL is a stripped-back version. No crowd, no away venues. Just Lahore and Karachi, down from the usual six cities. Fuel supply problems linked to regional conflicts forced organizers into this setup. That kind of locked-down environment means there's nowhere to hide. A ball goes out of shape, or someone enters a restricted area—it gets noticed and dealt with immediately. ### What Cricket Laws Say About Ball Tampering It's pretty straightforward. Law 41.3.2 says no player can change the ball's condition. Shining it during normal play is the only exception. Everything else is off limits. As one veteran umpire once put it: *"The ball is sacred. You protect it, you shine it properly, but you never cross that line."* Fakhar's case fell under article 41.3 of the PSL's own code, which says the same thing in slightly different words. ### Where Fakhar Stands in Pakistan Cricket Fakhar isn't some newcomer. He's been a fixture in Pakistan's white-ball sides for years. His T20I debut was in March 2017.
