Ganguly Takes Over Delhi Capitals: Can He End the Title Drought?

Delhi Capitals have made a bold move. On October 6, 2026, the franchise named Sourav Ganguly as their new head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The 54-year-old cricket legend returns to the franchise he knows well, tasked with ending a title drought that has haunted Delhi since the IPL's inception. ### Why the Change? Ganguly replaces Hemang Badani, who coached the team for two seasons. Under Badani and captain Axar Patel, Delhi finished sixth in the ten-team league in 2026. They missed the playoffs both years. The management decided a fresh tactical direction was needed, and Ganguly's deep ties to the organization made him the obvious choice. ### A Familiar Face Ganguly isn't new to Delhi Capitals. He first joined as an advisor in 2019, working alongside then-head coach Ricky Ponting to build the squad. Later, he served as Director of Cricket, overseeing all cricketing activities for both men's and women's teams. His experience extends beyond India: he coached Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 league, leading them to the final in 2023. Players like Keshav Maharaj have praised his ability to build a strong team culture. ### What Ganguly Brings - **Leadership pedigree:** Former India captain and BCCI president. - **Franchise knowledge:** Has worked with Delhi's owners, management, and support staff for years. - **Proven coaching:** Took Pretoria Capitals to the SA20 final in his first season. - **Player rapport:** Known for fostering leadership and a fearless approach. ### In His Own Words "I am excited to take on the role of Head Coach in the IPL," Ganguly said in an official statement. "Delhi Capitals is a franchise that is very close to my heart and one with which I have had a strong association over the years." He added: "I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players which makes this an exciting responsibility for me. We have got a talented bunch and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past." Looking ahead to 2027, Ganguly's priority is clear: "I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season and building a strong and fearless team." ### The Road Ahead The announcement comes before the player retention deadline and the mini-auction, giving Ganguly time to shape the squad. Delhi Capitals have never won an IPL title, and fans are hoping Ganguly's winning mentality can finally deliver. With his deep understanding of the game and the franchise, he might just be the missing piece. For more cricket news and updates, stay tuned.
