Ganguly Takes Over Delhi Capitals: Can He End the Title Drought?

Delhi Capitals have made a bold move. On October 6, 2026, the franchise named Sourav Ganguly as their new head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The 54-year-old cricket legend is stepping in to lead a team that's been chasing its first IPL title for years. Ganguly replaces Hemang Badani, who spent two seasons at the helm without a playoff appearance. The timing is key. The announcement came just before the player retention deadline and the upcoming mini-auction, giving Ganguly a chance to shape the squad his way. ### Why the Change Now? Badani coached the team through the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Under his watch, with Axar Patel leading on the field, Delhi Capitals finished sixth in the ten-team league in 2026. They missed the playoffs both years. So the management decided it was time for a fresh tactical direction. And they didn't have to look far. Ganguly has been part of the Delhi Capitals family since 2019, when he first joined as an official advisor. Back then, he worked closely with former head coach Ricky Ponting to build the squad. ### Ganguly's Coaching Resume Ganguly isn't new to leadership. After serving as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he returned to franchise cricket. JSW Sports named him Director of Cricket at Delhi Capitals, where he oversaw all cricketing activities for both the men's and women's teams. He also tested his coaching chops in international franchise leagues. As head coach of Pretoria Capitals, the South African sister franchise in the SA20 league, Ganguly took the team straight to the final in the 2023 season. South Africa international Keshav Maharaj praised Ganguly's methods during their time together. Maharaj highlighted how Ganguly built a strong team culture and fostered leadership among the players. > "I am excited to take on the role of Head Coach in the IPL," Ganguly said in an official statement. "Delhi Capitals is a franchise that is very close to my heart and one with which I have had a strong association over the years." ### What Ganguly Brings to the Table Ganguly knows the players, the owners, the management, and the support staff. That familiarity could be a huge advantage. He doesn't need a learning curve. He can hit the ground running. "We have got a talented bunch and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past," he added. "I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season and building a strong and fearless team." That last part is telling. "Strong and fearless" sounds like a team that won't back down in crunch moments. Delhi Capitals have had talent, but they've lacked that killer instinct in playoffs. Ganguly's job is to change that. ### What This Means for IPL 2027 The move signals that Delhi Capitals are done with mediocrity. They want a title. Ganguly's experience as a player, administrator, and coach gives him a unique perspective. He's seen the game from every angle. Fans are already buzzing. The franchise's social media post said it all: "Dilli, it's time for Dadagiri." That's a reference to Ganguly's nickname, Dada, and his authoritative style. Will it translate to wins? That's the million-dollar question. But one thing's for sure: Delhi Capitals aren't playing it safe anymore. They're going all-in on a legend who knows how to lead.
