Sourav Ganguly is the new head coach of Delhi Capitals for IPL 2027. After two playoff-less seasons under Hemang Badani, the franchise turns to a familiar face to chase that first title.
Delhi Capitals have handed the reins to one of Indian cricket's most recognizable figures. On October 6, 2026, the franchise named Sourav Ganguly as head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The 54-year-old legend now carries the hopes of a fanbase still waiting for that first IPL trophy.
He replaces Hemang Badani, whose two-year run ended without a single playoff appearance. The timing matters here. The announcement landed just before the player retention deadline and the upcoming mini-auction, giving Ganguly a real say in how this squad gets built.
### Why the Change Happened
Badani coached the side through the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Working alongside captain Axar Patel, he watched Delhi finish sixth in the ten-team league in 2026. Two straight years without playoffs was enough for management to change direction.
So why Ganguly? Simple. He already knows this building. He first joined Delhi Capitals back in 2019 as an official advisor, working closely with then-head coach Ricky Ponting to shape the squad.
### A Resume Built for This Job
Ganguly's credentials stretch well beyond one franchise. After serving as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he returned to franchise cricket when JSW Sports named him Director of Cricket at Delhi Capitals. In that role, he oversaw cricketing operations for both the men's and women's teams.
He's also tested himself as a head coach abroad. Ganguly took charge of Pretoria Capitals, Delhi's sister franchise in South Africa's SA20 league. In the 2023 season, he led them all the way to the final.
South Africa international Keshav Maharaj played under him there. Maharaj later praised how Ganguly built a strong team culture and pulled leadership out of his players. That's the kind of feedback that turns heads in a dressing room.
### What Ganguly Says About the Challenge
Ganguly didn't hide his feelings in the franchise's official statement. "I am excited to take on the role of Head Coach in the IPL," he said. "Delhi Capitals is a franchise that is very close to my heart and one with which I have had a strong association over the years."
He also pointed to familiarity as an advantage. "I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players which makes this an exciting responsibility for me," he said. "We have got a talented bunch and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past."
His priority for 2027? Clear enough. "I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season and building a strong and fearless team," Ganguly stated.
### The Road Ahead
- Ganguly inherits a roster that's shown flashes but lacked consistency in crunch moments
- The mini-auction gives him a chance to plug gaps before the season starts
- His prior stint as Director of Cricket means he already knows the support staff and setup
- A first IPL title remains the one box Delhi Capitals haven't ticked
There's something poetic about this. Ganguly spent years building this franchise from the inside. Now he's the one calling the shots from the dugout, with a squad full of talent and a city hungry for a championship.
Whether he can turn potential into silverware is the question every Delhi fan is asking. But if his track record tells us anything, he won't shy away from the pressure.
