Ganguly's Return: Can He Finally End Delhi's Title Drought?

Delhi Capitals appoint Sourav Ganguly as head coach for IPL 2027. Can the legendary captain end their title drought? Find out his plans and more.

Delhi Capitals have made a bold move. On October 6, 2026, the franchise announced that Sourav Ganguly, the legendary former India captain, will take over as head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. At 54, Ganguly brings a winning pedigree and a deep connection to the franchise. ### Why the Change? The decision comes after two underwhelming seasons under Hemang Badani. Delhi finished sixth in the 10-team league in 2026 and failed to reach the playoffs in both years. Something had to change. The management wanted a fresh tactical direction, and they turned to a familiar face. Ganguly isn't new to Delhi Capitals. He first joined as an advisor in 2019, working closely with then-head coach Ricky Ponting to build a competitive squad. Later, he served as Director of Cricket, overseeing all cricketing activities for both men's and women's teams. His deep understanding of the franchise makes him a natural fit. ### A Proven Coach Ganguly's coaching resume extends beyond India. He coached the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 league, leading them to the final in 2023. Players like Keshav Maharaj have praised his ability to build a strong team culture and develop leadership. That experience will be crucial as he aims to guide Delhi to their first IPL title. ### Ganguly's Vision In an official statement, Ganguly expressed his excitement: "Delhi Capitals is a franchise that is very close to my heart... We have got a talented bunch and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past." He added that his priority is "building a strong and fearless team" for the 2027 season. ### What This Means for Delhi With Ganguly at the helm, Delhi Capitals hope to turn their fortunes around. The team has shown flashes of brilliance but lacked consistency. Ganguly's leadership and tactical acumen could be the missing piece. Fans are eager to see if he can inspire the squad to go all the way. ### Key Takeaways - Ganguly replaces Hemang Badani, who failed to reach the playoffs in two seasons. - He has extensive experience with Delhi Capitals, both as an advisor and Director of Cricket. - His coaching stint with Pretoria Capitals in SA20 ended as runners-up in 2023. - Ganguly aims to build a "strong and fearless" team for IPL 2027. > "I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season and building a strong and fearless team." - Sourav Ganguly The 2027 IPL season can't come soon enough.
