Why Grant Flower Left Sussex for Surrey

Grant Flower leaves Sussex after five seasons to become Surrey's assistant coach. Financial struggles at Hove, a $1.7 million loss, and ECB special measures drove the move. Here's what it means for both clubs.

Surrey County Cricket Club has confirmed that Grant Flower will join the men's coaching staff as assistant coach, effective November 2026. The 55-year-old former Zimbabwe batter makes the short move to The Oval after five seasons at Sussex. He replaces Jim Troughton, who returned to his former county Warwickshire after serving as head coach Gareth Batty's assistant. Flower will begin his new duties as Surrey prepare for the 2027 season. ### The Money Problem Behind the Move Sussex had a rough financial year in 2024-25, reporting an operating loss of about $1.7 million. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) responded by placing the club under special measures in February 2026. Flower was candid about how much that weighed on his decision. He said he loved his five years at Hove, but that all good things come to an end. The club's ongoing financial troubles, he admitted, forced him into a difficult career choice. > "I loved my time at Sussex, but the financial situation made this a hard decision. I'm grateful for the years I had there and I'm looking forward to a new chapter with Surrey." Flower became Sussex's lead batting coach in 2022 and worked closely with the club's young batting group. His technical coaching helped Sussex earn promotion to Division One of the County Championship in 2024, and the side finished third in the top flight in 2026. ### A Growing List of Exits at Hove Flower's departure is part of a broader shake-up this autumn. Former head coach Paul Farbrace left to become director of cricket at Lancashire, despite earlier plans to move into a part-time director role at Hove. Sussex then appointed Matt Walker as head coach. Key players have walked too: - Wicketkeeper John Simpson signed with Nottinghamshire - Fast bowler Henry Crocombe earned a two-year ECB central contract after a strong summer Add it all up, and Sussex faces a serious rebuild while operating under special measures. ### What Surrey Is Getting Flower brings more than a decade of international coaching experience. As a player, he represented Zimbabwe in 288 international matches between 1992 and 2010, including 67 Tests as a top-order batter. He also played county cricket in England for Essex and Leicestershire. His coaching rรฉsumรฉ is just as deep. He started with Zimbabwe in 2010, then became Pakistan's batting coach in 2014 for five years, guiding them to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy title at The Oval. He spent two years with Sri Lanka before joining Sussex in 2022. Flower said Surrey has a strong cricketing culture, and he's eager to contribute to it. For a club chasing trophies, adding a coach with his international pedigree and county knowledge looks like a smart piece of business. For Sussex, the challenge is different. Replacing that kind of experience, on and off the field, won't happen overnight.
