Grant Flower's Surrey Switch: The Real Reason He Left Sussex

Grant Flower leaves Sussex for Surrey after five seasons, citing financial challenges. The 55-year-old joins Gareth Batty's staff at The Oval as assistant coach.

Surrey County Cricket Club has confirmed that Grant Flower will join their men's coaching staff as assistant coach, effective November 2026. The 55-year-old former Zimbabwe batter makes the short move from Sussex after five seasons at Hove. He'll work alongside head coach Gareth Batty at The Oval, replacing Jim Troughton, who returned to Warwickshire. Flower's decision wasn't purely cricketing. Sussex's financial struggles played a significant role, and he's been open about that. ### Financial Struggles Force Sussex Exit Sussex faced a tough financial year in 2024-25, reporting an operating loss of ยฃ1.33m (about $1.7 million). In February 2026, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) imposed special measures on the club. Flower admitted these off-field issues were a big factor in his departure. "I've loved my five years at Sussex, but all good things must come to an end," he said. "The club's ongoing financial problems forced me into a difficult career choice." He remains grateful for his time at Hove and is looking forward to a new chapter with Surrey. Flower became Sussex's lead batting coach in 2022 and worked with the club's young batting squad. His technical coaching helped Sussex gain promotion to Division One of the County Championship in 2024. Under his guidance, Sussex maintained excellent form and finished third in the top flight in the 2026 season. ### Departures Continue at Hove Flower's move adds to a growing list of departures from Sussex this autumn. Former head coach Paul Farbrace recently left to become director of cricket at Lancashire, despite previous plans to transition into a part-time role at Hove. Sussex subsequently appointed Matt Walker as their new head coach. Key players have also left. Wicketkeeper John Simpson signed with Nottinghamshire, and fast bowler Henry Crocombe earned a two-year ECB central contract following a successful summer. These exits create major rebuild requirements for Sussex as they navigate special measures. ### Flower Brings Proven International Experience Flower brings over ten years of international coaching experience to Surrey. During his playing career, he represented Zimbabwe in 288 international matches between 1992 and 2010, including 67 Test matches as a top-order batter. He also played county cricket in England for Essex and Leicestershire. After retiring, Flower began coaching Zimbabwe in 2010. He became Pakistan's batting coach in 2014, a role he held for five years. He guided Pakistan to victory in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy at The Oval. He then served as Sri Lanka's coach for two years before joining Sussex in 2022. > "Surrey has a strong cricketing culture and I'm excited to be part of it. The opportunity to work with Gareth Batty and the talented squad here is something I'm really looking forward to." โ€“ Grant Flower Flower's appointment is a coup for Surrey as they prepare for the 2027 season. His experience and track record speak for themselves, and his arrival could be the edge Surrey need to challenge for titles. For Sussex, the focus now shifts to rebuilding under new head coach Matt Walker. The club faces a challenging period, but with the right appointments and a bit of luck, they can turn things around. One thing's for sure: Flower's departure leaves big shoes to fill at Hove.
