Grant Flower leaves Sussex for Surrey after five seasons, citing financial challenges. The former Zimbabwe batter brings over a decade of international coaching experience to The Oval.
Surrey County Cricket Club has confirmed that Grant Flower will join their men's coaching staff as assistant coach, effective November 2026. The 55-year-old former Zimbabwe batter makes the short move from Sussex after five seasons at Hove. He'll link up with head coach Gareth Batty at The Oval, replacing Jim Troughton, who returned to Warwickshire.
Flower's decision wasn't purely cricketing. Sussex's financial struggles played a big part. The club reported an operating loss of ยฃ1.33 million ($1.7 million) in 2024-25, and the ECB imposed special measures in February 2026. "All good things must come to an end," Flower admitted, reflecting on his time at Hove. He said the ongoing financial problems forced a difficult career choice.
### Financial Struggles Force Sussex Exit
Sussex's money troubles have had a ripple effect. Beyond Flower's departure, former head coach Paul Farbrace left to become director of cricket at Lancashire. Key players have also exited: wicketkeeper John Simpson signed with Nottinghamshire, and fast bowler Henry Crocombe earned a two-year ECB central contract. These losses leave Sussex with a major rebuild as they navigate special measures.
### Flower Brings Proven International Experience
Flower isn't just any coach. He played 288 international matches for Zimbabwe between 1992 and 2010, including 67 Tests as a top-order batter. He also had county stints with Essex and Leicestershire. After retiring, he coached Zimbabwe from 2010, then served as Pakistan's batting coach from 2014 to 2019, guiding them to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy title at The Oval. He also coached Sri Lanka for two years before joining Sussex in 2022.
At Sussex, Flower became lead batting coach in 2022 and helped the club gain promotion to Division One in 2024. They finished third in the top flight in 2026. His technical expertise will be a big asset for Surrey as they prepare for the 2027 season.

### Departures Continue at Hove
Flower's exit is the latest in a series of departures from Sussex this autumn. The club has already appointed Matt Walker as their new head coach. But with key players and staff leaving, Sussex faces a challenging period. Flower, for his part, is grateful for his five years at Hove and looking forward to a new chapter with Surrey.
For Surrey, landing a coach with Flower's international pedigree is a coup. His experience working with top-level batters could be the edge Surrey needs to challenge for titles in the coming seasons.
