Kagiso Rabada Out as Anrich Nortje Returns for South Africa

Kagiso Rabada will miss the first Test against Australia due to a hamstring injury. Anrich Nortje returns after three and a half years as South Africa name their XI for the series opener in Durban.

### Rabada Ruled Out of First Test South Africa's pace attack will look a little different when they take on Australia in the first Test at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban. Captain Temba Bavuma named his starting eleven on October 8, 2026, and the big news is that Kagiso Rabada won't be playing. Rabada is still recovering from a hamstring injury he picked up during winter training back in June. He hasn't played any competitive cricket since turning out for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League in May. His last Test appearance was during South Africa's tour of Pakistan in October 2025. This is a significant blow for the Proteas. Rabada was the hero of their World Test Championship final win over Australia at Lord's in June 2025, where he took nine wickets. But rushing him back now just isn't worth the risk. ### Nortje's Long-Awaited Comeback While Rabada sits out, Anrich Nortje is set to play his first Test in over three and a half years. The last time he wore the whites was against the West Indies in March 2023. Since then, he's been battling back from injury and building his fitness in the European T20 Premier League in the Netherlands and Ireland. Nortje's raw pace is his biggest weapon. During net sessions on Wednesday, he was consistently bowling over 93 mph (150 km/h). Captain Bavuma didn't hold back his excitement, calling Nortje a genuine X-factor bowler. But given his history of back stress fractures, the medical staff will be keeping a close eye on his workload. ### Bowling Strategy and Selections South Africa have gone with two specialist spinners for this match: Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer. Harmer comes in for fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, who is also sidelined with a hamstring injury. This is the first time Maharaj and Harmer have bowled together in a Test since facing India in November 2025. The pace attack will be led by Nortje, with support from Marco Jansen and seam-bowling all-rounder Wiaan Mulder. Mulder got the nod ahead of Corbin Bosch because he adds extra batting depth at number six. Wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne will bat at seven. ### Batting Lineup and Series Context The top order remains unchanged. Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton will open, with David Bedingham at number three. Captain Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs fill the middle order at four and five. On the bench, Marques Ackermann, Gerald Coetzee, Dane Paterson, Senuran Muthusamy, Corbin Bosch, and Rabada will be waiting for their chance. This series is huge for South Africa. It's the first time they've hosted Australia in a Test series since 2017/18. And they'll be riding a wave of confidence after beating the Aussies 2-1 in a three-match ODI series recently. The first Test starts on October 9, 2026. The series then moves to Gqeberha for the second Test, starting October 18, before finishing in Cape Town. South Africa are hoping Rabada will be fit for that second match, but for now, all eyes are on Nortje and the rest of the attack to deliver.
