KZNCU CEO Heinrich Strydom has ordered a full review after fewer than 20,000 fans attended the South Africa vs. Australia Test at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban.
When fewer than 20,000 fans show up for a five-day Test between South Africa and Australia, something's clearly off. That's exactly what happened at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban โ and now the people in charge are asking hard questions.
Heinrich Strydom, CEO of the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU), announced a full internal review on Tuesday. His message was blunt: a match of this quality deserved far more love from the stands.
### The Numbers Don't Lie
Let's put the turnout in perspective. Kingsmead holds 20,000 spectators per day. Across five days, just under 20,000 fans walked through the gates in total โ meaning the ground filled less than one-fifth of its available capacity. Average daily attendance sat below 4,000 people.
That's a tough look for South Africa's first home Test since January 2025.
### Why Did Fans Stay Home?
Strydom gets that people are stretched thin right now. Money's tight, schedules are packed, and choices have to be made. But he also wants to understand what's actually driving those decisions. Several factors stacked up against this match:
- Civil unrest: protests in Durban's Central Business District, roughly 0.6 miles from the stadium, disrupted the surrounding area throughout the match.
- Cost of living: Test captain Temba Bavuma raised these pressures directly in his post-match press conference, speaking in isiXhosa.
- Exam season: local school and university schedules kept younger fans at home.
- Competing sports: over 50,000 football fans packed another venue across town for the Orlando Pirates vs. Mamelodi Sundowns cup final.
That last one hurts. Two major sporting events in one city on the same weekend is a scheduling headache no cricket board can easily fix.

### This Isn't a New Problem for Kingsmead
The stadium has been fighting low attendance for years. Cricket South Africa already pulled the traditional Boxing Day Test out of Durban and moved it to SuperSport Park in Centurion. White-ball cricket hasn't fared much better โ the season-opening ODI against Australia on September 24 drew just over 12,000 fans, and that was on a national public holiday.
Calendar pressure makes it worse. The SA20 league owns January and February. The Indian Premier League swallows the autumn months. That pushed administrators into scheduling an international Test in October for the very first time.
### What Happens Next
Strydom has promised KZNCU will talk directly with local communities and cricket followers. He wants to know what would actually bring families back to the ground โ making live matches more accessible, more appealing, and more engaging for fans of all ages.
On the field, Australia took a 1-0 series lead with a dominant 214-run win, their first Test series in South Africa since the 2018 sandpaper scandal. It also ended Temba Bavuma's remarkable run of 12 straight Tests unbeaten as captain.
So the cricket itself delivered drama. The real question now is whether Durban fans will show up to see it next time โ and whether the KZNCU's review can actually change the story.
