Chennai Super Kings have confirmed that Australian pacer Nathan Ellis will not be available for IPL 2026 after picking up a hamstring injury. The development is a significant setback for the five-time champions, who were counting on Ellis to anchor their pace attack in the upcoming season.

CSK are yet to name a replacement and are currently weighing their options from the Registered Available Player Pool, which contains over 1,300 players.

“It is a big blow for us. Ellis is a crucial bowler, especially in the death overs. We are looking at replacements,” CSK CEO K.S. Viswanathan told Sportstar.

A separate franchise official confirmed the news to Cricbuzz: “Yes, he is out. We have not yet decided on the replacement.”

What Ellis Meant to CSK

Ellis, 31, was bought by CSK at the IPL 2025 mega auction for Rs 2 crore and retained ahead of the 2026 season. Across 17 IPL appearances in his career, he has taken 19 wickets, with his primary value concentrated in the death overs, where his ability to deliver precise yorkers and well-disguised slower balls under pressure made him one of the more reliable options in the format. He had previously represented Punjab Kings across four seasons before moving to Chennai.

His absence carries added weight because CSK no longer have Matheesha Pathirana available either. The Sri Lankan fast bowler, who was one of the most feared death-over specialists in the competition, was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of this season. With Pathirana gone and Ellis now ruled out, Chennai face the start of their campaign with a genuine and visible gap in their bowling attack.

The exact circumstances of Ellis’s injury are not fully clear. He most recently turned out for Tasmania in the Australian One-Day Cup final in Hobart, where he returned figures of 2 for 26 across five overs in a defeat to New South Wales.

Before that, he had been managing a hamstring problem during the Big Bash League, which kept him out of the competition’s knockout rounds while he was captaining the Hobart Hurricanes. It is possible the underlying issue was never fully resolved before the IPL window opened.

CSK’s Broader Season Context

The injury arrives at a moment when CSK are attempting to rebuild after a thoroughly poor IPL 2025 campaign. In 14 matches last season, they lost 10 and finished at the bottom of the points table. It was a performance that prompted the franchise to make substantive changes to their squad composition going into 2026.

The most discussed of those changes was the trade involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, both of whom departed from Chennai. In exchange, the franchise acquired wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, a move that signalled a deliberate shift in how CSK are trying to build their team.

That deal, however, now comes with an additional complication. Reports indicate that Curran, who moved to Rajasthan Royals as part of the arrangement, has also been ruled out of IPL 2026 with a groin injury, leaving the Royals to manage their own shortage heading into the season.

At the auction, CSK drew significant attention for their recruitment of two uncapped Indian players at record prices. UP all-rounder Prashant Veer and Rajasthan wicketkeeper Kartik Sharma were both acquired for Rs 14.20 crore each, making them the most expensive uncapped players in the history of the IPL auction.

The squad will be led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, who missed a portion of last season due to injury. During that period, MS Dhoni stepped in as captain. Dhoni, now 44, is set to play another IPL season. His numbers in 2025 were modest: 196 runs at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17, with a best score of 30 not out.

Despite the underwhelming returns with the bat, Dhoni remains central to the franchise’s identity, and CSK will be aiming to win a record-extending sixth title. CSK open their season against the Rajasthan Royals on March 30 in Guwahati.

Other Injury Concerns Across the Tournament

The Ellis situation is part of a wider pattern of injury-related disruptions affecting multiple franchises in the days before IPL 2026 gets underway.

Jack Edwards, another Australian, has also been ruled out of the tournament. Edwards was set to make his IPL debut with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who signed him for Rs 3 crore at the player auction.

SRH confirmed his unavailability, though the specific nature of his injury has not been disclosed publicly. This is the second injury setback for the Sunrisers, who are also uncertain about the availability of their regular captain Pat Cummins. The franchise has named Ishan Kishan as captain for their opening matches while Cummins continues his recovery.

IPL 2026 gets underway on March 28 when Sunrisers Hyderabad host defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

For CSK, the timeline is pressing. With ten days to go before their season opener, the franchise must identify and register an overseas replacement for Ellis who can fill a specialist death-bowling role from match one.

The RAPP provides a large pool of candidates, but sourcing a bowler of Ellis’s calibre at short notice is rarely a clean process, and how CSK navigate this period will be one of the early tests of their management ahead of what they hope will be a much-improved season.
