Nepal's Rapper PM Bans Online Gambling Immediately

You might think a 35-year-old rapper would be all for a good time, right? Well, Nepal's new Prime Minister, Balendra Shah, just shattered that stereotype. His first major move? They had just 24 hours to "immediately close [all] betting apps and websites, including any electronic betting." The NTA then worked directly with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block access. Essentially, they cut off the digital pipeline to these platforms for anyone in Nepal. This isn't just a symbolic gesture. The government is serious about enforcement. They've pledged to take "strict action" against anyone who uses or operates these banned sites. The penalties are no joke: - Prison sentences ranging from three to twelve months - Fines of Rs30,000, which is about $300 It's a stark warning that underscores how seriously they're taking this new law.  ### The Political Backdrop Shah's rise to power came with significant political fallout. His main rival, former PM KP Sharma Oli, was arrested the day before the gambling ban was announced. Oli faces allegations of authorizing deadly force against protesters last year. That protest, known as the "Gen-Z Uprising" in September 2025, was a tragic event. Over 19 protesters were killed by police. They were marching against government corruption and protesting Oli's own ban on major social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X. It's a complex political landscape, and Shah's gambling ban is one of the first clear policy shifts marking a new era.  ### Why the Sudden Crackdown? The government's concern seems to center on the risks associated with online betting. Despite making all forms of gambling illegal, officials have watched its popularity grow, especially among young people. They cite the financial and social dangers it poses.
