Punam Raut retires from international cricket at 37, leaving behind a legacy of 2,299 ODI runs and a historic 2017 World Cup campaign.
Punam Raut, the Indian top-order batter, has announced her retirement from all forms of international cricket. She shared the news on Instagram, just a day after turning 37. Her decision brings an end to a career that spanned over a decade and inspired countless fans.
Raut represented India from 2009 to 2021, playing four Tests, 73 ODIs, and 35 T20Is. In her heartfelt message, she said representing India was the greatest honor of her life. She spoke about how cricket shaped her character and taught her resilience.
### A Career Built on Determination
Raut's journey began with the Mumbai Cricket Association, which she thanked for backing her in her early years. She credited the opportunities and guidance she received there as the foundation of her career.
She made her ODI debut in 2009 and quickly became a key player. In 73 ODIs, she scored 2,299 runs at an average of 34.83, including three centuries and 15 half-centuries. Her most memorable performances came in the 2017 Women's World Cup, where she hit a century against Australia and top-scored with 86 in the final against England.
> "Cricket gave me memories I will carry for good," Raut wrote. "I wore the India jersey with pride and gratitude every time I took the field."
That 2017 World Cup, she said, changed the future of women's cricket in India and inspired a generation of young girls. India fell short of the trophy, but Raut's contributions were unforgettable.
### Record-Breaking Moments
Raut also holds a place in the record books for a 320-run opening stand with Deepti Sharma against Ireland in 2017. Raut retired hurt on 109 off 116 balls, while Deepti made 188 off 160.
In Tests, she began with a duck but bounced back with a 130 against South Africa in 2014. In T20Is, she scored 719 runs at an average of 27.65 and a strike rate of 92.17, with four half-centuries. She played in four T20 World Cups and produced match-winning knocks, including a 54 not out against Pakistan in 2009.
Her last game for India was a drawn Test against Australia in 2021, where she scored 36 and 41 not out.
Raut's retirement comes as India enters a new era under captain Smriti Mandhana. Her legacy, however, will continue to inspire.
