Rabada Out, Nortje In: South Africa's Bold Gamble for First Australia Test

Kagiso Rabada misses the first Test against Australia due to a hamstring injury, while Anrich Nortje returns after three and a half years. South Africa aims for a strong start in Durban.

### Rabada Ruled Out, Nortje Recalled for Durban Opener South Africa will be without their spearhead Kagiso Rabada for the first Test against Australia at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban, starting October 9, 2026. Captain Temba Bavuma confirmed the news on October 8, revealing that Rabada hasn't recovered sufficiently from a hamstring injury sustained during winter training back in June. In his place, Anrich Nortje returns to the Test side after more than three and a half years away from the red-ball format. This three-match series is part of the World Test Championship and marks the first time Australia has toured South Africa for Tests since 2018. The hosts are eager to make a strong start in Durban before the series moves to Gqeberha and Cape Town. ### Kagiso Rabada's Injury Timeline Rabada's last competitive appearance was for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League in May 2026. He hasn't played a Test since South Africa's tour of Pakistan in October 2025. The fast bowler was instrumental in South Africa's World Test Championship final victory over Australia at Lord's in June 2025, where he took nine wickets. He did return to bowling in an intra-squad practice match last weekend and completed a training session at Kingsmead on Thursday. However, Bavuma opted to rest him rather than risk further muscle damage. Rabada remains under the care of team doctors until he receives official medical clearance. The team hopes he'll be available for the second Test in Gqeberha, starting October 18. ### Anrich Nortje: The X-Factor Returns Nortje last played a Test against the West Indies in March 2023. The 32-year-old pacer built up his match fitness during the European T20 Premier League in the Netherlands and Ireland last month. During net sessions on Wednesday, he regularly bowled deliveries exceeding 93 mph (150 km/h). Bavuma praised Nortje's genuine pace, calling him an X-factor bowler. However, given his history of back stress fractures, the medical staff will monitor his workload closely during the match. ### Tactical Bowling Selections South Africa selected two specialist spinners: Keshav Maharaj and off-spinner Simon Harmer. Harmer replaced fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, who is also sidelined with a hamstring injury. Maharaj and Harmer last bowled together in a Test against India in November 2025. Marco Jansen and seam-bowling all-rounder Wiaan Mulder complete the fast bowling unit alongside Nortje. Selectors chose Mulder ahead of Corbin Bosch because Mulder offers stronger batting depth at number six. Wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne bats at number seven. ### Top-Order Batting and Match Context South Africa's opening pair consists of Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton. David Bedingham takes the number three spot. Captain Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs complete the middle order at four and five. Marques Ackermann, Gerald Coetzee, Dane Paterson, Senuran Muthusamy, Corbin Bosch, and Rabada make up the reserve bench. This series is the first Test meeting between South Africa and Australia on South African soil since the 2017/18 tour. South Africa recently gained confidence by defeating Australia 2-1 in a three-match One Day International series. > "Nortje brings that raw pace and aggression we need," Bavuma said. "He's a game-changer, and we're confident he can make an impact." With Rabada out, South Africa's bowling attack will rely heavily on Nortje's express pace and the spin duo of Maharaj and Harmer. The first Test promises to be a thrilling contest as the hosts look to upset the top-ranked Australians.
