Kagiso Rabada will miss the first Test against Australia in Durban due to a hamstring injury. Anrich Nortje returns to the South Africa XI after three and a half years. Captain Temba Bavuma named his team on 8 October 2026.
South Africa's first Test against Australia in Durban is just hours away, and the hosts have made a big call. Kagiso Rabada, their strike bowler, won't play the series opener at Kingsmead. Instead, Anrich Nortje returns to the Test XI after more than three and a half years away.
Captain Temba Bavuma named the starting eleven on October 8, 2026, with the three-match World Test Championship series beginning the next day. It's South Africa's first home Test series against Australia since 2018, and they're aiming for a fast start before the action moves to Gqeberha and Cape Town.
### Why Rabada Is Sitting Out
Rabada suffered a hamstring injury during winter training back in June 2026. He hasn't played competitive cricket since representing Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League in May. His last Test appearance came during South Africa's tour of Pakistan in October 2025.
Remember, this is the same bowler who starred in South Africa's World Test Championship final victory over Australia at Lord's in June 2025, taking nine wickets. So his absence is huge.
He did return to bowling in an intra-squad practice match last weekend and completed a training session at Kingsmead on Thursday. But Bavuma chose to rest him rather than risk further muscle damage. Rabada remains under the complete care of team doctors until they give him the green light. The hope is he'll be back for the second Test in Gqeberha, starting October 18.
### Nortje's Express Pace Returns
Anrich Nortje last played a Test against the West Indies in March 2023. The 32-year-old pacer built up his match fitness in the European T20 Premier League in the Netherlands and Ireland last month.
In net sessions on Wednesday, Nortje regularly bowled deliveries exceeding 93 mph. Bavuma praised his genuine pace and called him an X-factor bowler. But given Nortje's history of back stress fractures, the medical staff will monitor his workload closely.
### Tactical Bowling Changes
South Africa selected two specialist spinners: Keshav Maharaj and off-spinner Simon Harmer. Harmer replaced fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, who also sits out with a hamstring injury. Maharaj and Harmer last bowled together in a Test against India in November 2025.
Marco Jansen and seam-bowling all-rounder Wiaan Mulder complete the fast bowling unit alongside Nortje. Selectors chose Mulder ahead of Corbin Bosch because Mulder offers stronger batting depth at number six. Wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne bats at number seven.
### Top-Order and Match Context
South Africa's opening partnership features Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton. David Bedingham takes the number three spot. Captain Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs complete the middle order at four and five. Marques Ackermann joins Gerald Coetzee, Dane Paterson, Senuran Muthusamy, Corbin Bosch, and Rabada on the reserve bench.
This series marks the first Test meetings between South Africa and Australia on South African soil since the 2017/18 tour. South Africa recently gained confidence by defeating Australia 2-1 in a three-match One Day International series.
As Bavuma put it: "We've got a job to do. Nortje brings that extra gear, and we're confident in the group we've selected."
All eyes will be on Durban to see if South Africa's gamble pays off.
