Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra are out of New Zealand's ODI series against India with injuries. Tim Seifert, Henry Nicholls, and Dean Foxcroft come in as replacements. Can the Black Caps cope?
New Zealand's ODI series against India just got a whole lot tougher. Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra are both out with injuries, and the team has called in reinforcements.
### Chapman's Hamstring Still Not Right
An MRI scan revealed that Chapman's left hamstring needs another two weeks of rehab. He tore it back in September at the European T20 Premier League. That's a frustrating setback for a player who's been in decent form.
### Ravindra's Shoulder Not Ready
Ravindra's right shoulder hasn't healed enough for him to field at full capacity. He hurt it during a promotional shoot in September. With a Test series coming up later this month, the team is being extra cautious with his workload.
Head coach Rob Walter didn't hide his disappointment. "We're gutted to lose both guys," he said. "Chapman is working hard to get back, and we had a good chat last week. With Ravindra, we just can't take any risks with the Tests around the corner."
### Seifert, Nicholls, and Foxcroft Step In
Tim Seifert was originally only picked for the last two ODIs, but now he's in for the whole series. Henry Nicholls, who turns 35 this month, comes in for the first three matches. And Dean Foxcroft, currently playing red-ball cricket for New Zealand A, will join for the final two games.
Nicholls is coming off a solid 119 for Canterbury in the Ford Trophy on Saturday. He's played 92 ODIs for New Zealand and was part of the squad that toured the West Indies in July.
Matthew Fisher was initially only down for the last two games, but he's now in the full series as an extra bowling option. Matt Henry, who was ruled out midway through the T20I series, joined the ODI squad on Monday. The team management will assess his fitness before deciding if he can play.
### Updated Squad for First Three ODIs
Mitchell Santner (captain), Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matthew Fisher, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham (wicketkeeper), Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Glenn Phillips, Tim Seifert, Nathan Smith, Will Young, and Blair Tickner.
### Squad for Last Two ODIs
Santner (captain), Finn Allen, Bracewell, Kristian Clarke, Duffy, Fisher, Dean Foxcroft, Lockie Ferguson, Mitchell Hay (wicketkeeper), Nick Kelly, Seifert (wicketkeeper), Tickner, and Young.
The first ODI is at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday, November 4. India's squad has also seen changes, with Ishan Kishan set to be vice-captain for the fourth and fifth games once the Test players leave to join the red-ball group.
> "We're disappointed, but it's next man up. These guys have been training hard and they're ready to step in," Walter added.
New Zealand will need to dig deep without two of their key players. The series promises to be a real test of depth.
