An 18-year-old stole the show at the SA20 auction with a record R2.9 million deal. Joburg Super Kings and MI Cape Town loaded up on star power ahead of the 2027 season.
### The Night a Teenager Outshone the Legends
Four SA20 franchises opened their wallets at the Betway SA20 Season 5 Player Auction in Johannesburg on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. They were filling 19 remaining squad slots ahead of the 2027 tournament, and the bidding got wild. But nobody expected an 18-year-old to walk away with the biggest paycheck of the evening.
Joburg Super Kings picked Jason Rowles for a record R2.9 million (roughly $156,600). That's right โ a teenager just out-earned some of the biggest names in T20 cricket.
### Who Is Jason Rowles?
If you haven't heard of him yet, you will soon. Rowles scored 280 runs in five innings at an average of 70 and a strike rate of 112 for South Africa at the Under-19 World Cup earlier in 2026. He also smashed a double-hundred in a Youth Test against England in Hove in July 2026. Just a year ago, he was playing in the final of the Schools SA20 tournament.
MI Cape Town and Joburg Super Kings fought an intense bidding battle for the Under-23 player before JSK finally secured his signature. The purchase made Rowles the most expensive player of the entire auction.
### Joburg Super Kings Rebuild Around Experience
Joburg Super Kings entered the auction with the largest remaining purse of R20.6 million ($1.245 million) under new head coach Albie Morkel. They bought back former captain Faf du Plessis for R2.7 million after beating MI Cape Town in a bidding war. Du Plessis returns to the Wanderers, where he played during the first four SA20 seasons.
The franchise also signed West Indies legend Kieron Pollard unopposed at his base price of R1.5 million. Pollard joins a Super Kings team for the first time after playing for Mumbai Indians franchise teams across global leagues for many years.
Joburg Super Kings completed their roster by signing:
- Local all-rounder Dayyaan Galiem for R375,000
- USA international batter Andries Gous for R1.0 million
- Zimbabwean fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani for R500,000
- English all-rounder Jamie Overton as their wildcard player
### MI Cape Town Load Up on Firepower
Head coach Robin Peterson and MI Cape Town had R9.35 million ($565,150) heading into the bidding session. West Indies power-hitter Shimron Hetmyer became the first player sold in the auction when MI Cape Town bought him for R1.5 million.
The team also brought back New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult for R1.5 million to lead their powerplay bowling attack. Boult's experience at the top of the innings is exactly what MI Cape Town needs.
MI Cape Town then won a bidding contest against Joburg Super Kings to buy South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for R2.6 million. Mulder joins MI Cape Town after playing for Joburg Super Kings last season.
They filled their remaining slots by signing Daniel Smith for R200,000 and Lehan Botha for R200,000.
> "The auction showed one thing clearly: youth is no longer a gamble in T20 cricket. It's an investment."
### What This Means for the 2027 Season
The fifth season of the SA20 league begins on January 17, 2027, in Gqeberha. With squads now locked in, the battle lines are drawn. Joburg Super Kings have a mix of raw teenage talent and seasoned veterans. MI Cape Town have assembled a roster built for explosive power hitting and disciplined bowling.
The big question? Can a teenager justify the biggest price tag of the auction? Or will the seasoned campaigners like Pollard and du Plessis prove that experience still wins championships?
One thing's for sure โ the 2027 SA20 season just got a whole lot more interesting.
