SLC Avoids ICC Sanctions Over New Committee

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) just got a big break. The International Cricket Council (ICC) decided not to slap any sanctions on the country's freshly appointed Transformation Committee. This came after the ICC's quarterly board meeting in Ahmedabad, where they reviewed what's been happening with Sri Lankan cricket administration. The committee was put together by the Sri Lankan government back in May, replacing the elected SLC leaders. Given the ICC's history of punishing SLC for government meddling, many worried this could lead to another suspension. But so far, no disciplinary actions have been announced. ### ICC Takes a Pass on Sanctions The ICC has been pretty strict before about government involvement in Sri Lanka Cricket. In both 2015 and 2023, they imposed sanctions after deciding that politicians were interfering too much in how the sport was run. This latest shake-up got attention because it involved removing the elected SLC leadership and installing a government-backed committee. To check things out, ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja flew to Colombo in May and met with key people during a fact-finding visit. Despite all the concern, the ICC hasn't taken any action against SLC after its latest board meeting. A member of the Transformation Committee said the mood inside the organization is positive right now, adding that the lack of sanctions is seen as a good sign. The ICC's official statement after the Ahmedabad meeting only briefly mentioned Sri Lanka. It said Khwaja and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) representative Devajit Saikia had visited Sri Lanka and met with relevant stakeholders to assess what's happening.  ### Transformation Committee Focuses on Constitutional Reform The Transformation Committee is led by former politician Eran Wickramaratne. He's said their main goal is to fix up the governance structure of Sri Lanka Cricket. According to Wickramaratne, the current SLC constitution is outdated and doesn't match what the public expects anymore. The committee plans to gather input from stakeholders before drafting a new framework. He mentioned that discussions in Parliament have shown broad agreement that changes are needed within Sri Lanka Cricket. The committee will consult the public and other stakeholders as part of the reform process. Officials have stressed that the focus is on creating a governance model that boosts accountability and strengthens administration. The constitutional review is expected to be one of the committee's key jobs.  ### Future ICC Representation Still Uncertain Even though no sanctions were imposed, Sri Lanka Cricket didn't have a representative at the ICC's quarterly meeting in Ahmedabad. No SLC officials were invited, which shows the uncertainty around the current administrative situation. Members of the Transformation Committee are hopeful they'll be able to join future ICC meetings as reforms move forward. Getting representation at international cricket forums remains an important goal. The ICC hasn't said whether Sri Lankan representatives will be invited to upcoming meetings.
