Tony de Zorzi is out of South Africa's first Test against Australia with a hamstring injury. He's the fifth player sidelined by the same issue in two months.
South Africa's batting lineup just took a hit they didn't need. Tony de Zorzi is out of the first Test against Australia with a hamstring injury, and the timing couldn't be worse. The match kicks off Friday, October 9, at Kingsmead in Durban.
Here's the thing that's really got people talking: De Zorzi is the fifth South African player to deal with hamstring trouble in just two months. That's not a coincidence. That's a pattern.
### What Happened to De Zorzi?
The 29-year-old hurt his hamstring while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Potchefstroom. Cricket South Africa called it a mild injury in their Saturday statement, but mild or not, it's enough to keep him out of the series opener.
He left the field during Australia's innings and never came out to bat as South Africa chased 323. That match wrapped up the one-day series, and now all eyes turn to the red-ball format.
CSA has named an extended 18-player preliminary squad and decided not to replace De Zorzi just yet. They'll trim it down to the final 15 early next week.
### The Injury List Keeps Growing
Before De Zorzi, four fast bowlers all dealt with the same hamstring issue:
- Kagiso Rabada (injured during winter training)
- Lungi Ngidi
- Ottneil Baartman
- Kwena Maphaka
Ngidi, Maphaka, and Baartman are out for the entire series. All three should be back for the home summer, which includes tours from Bangladesh and England.
Ngidi spoke at the 2027 ODI World Cup schedule launch on Thursday and said he's already back running. He kept details close to the vest, saying he's "not allowed to share anything further," but described his recovery as "so far, so good."
Rabada's situation is still up in the air. South Africa will decide on his availability for Durban after a two-day intra-squad match starting Sunday. He's been ramping up his training workload to prepare.
### Marques Ackerman Could Finally Get His Shot
With De Zorzi sidelined, Marques Ackerman has a real chance to make his Test debut in Durban. The No. 3 batter earned his spot through strong performances for South Africa A, including a career-best 256 against Bangladesh A.
He's never played a Test for South Africa. Now he might get that opportunity.
Ackerman is reportedly in contention for a place in the final XI alongside Tristan Stubbs, Wiaan Mulder, and David Bedingham, who could also slot in at No. 5.
### Bavuma's Honest Take
Captain Temba Bavuma didn't sugarcoat things. He said the injuries have disrupted the team's plans, but frustration won't change anything.
> "The squad has spoken with the medical team, and they're doing their best. Another player now has the opportunity to step in and perform when required."
That's the mindset you need when things go sideways. Next man up.
### What's Next for South Africa?
The final squad gets named early next week. Rabada's fate will be decided after the intra-squad match. And the first Test starts Friday at Kingsmead.
South Africa has depth, but losing five players to the same injury in two months raises questions. Is it training methods? Bad luck? Something else? The medical team will be under the microscope.
For now, all they can do is adapt. And hope the hamstring bug doesn't bite again.
